Moment 1

Gapado barley fields in full bloom

We catch the ferry from Moseulpo to Gapado ??a 4 km island where green barley waves shoulder-high in early May, only this one week of the year. UNESCO biosphere reserve, 270 residents, no cars.

Moment 2

Hallasan azalea trail, Witse-orum

Above 1,400 m the royal azaleas (泥좎춬) carpet the slopes pink. We take the easier Yeongsil approach ??about 3.5 hours round trip, all of it on a wooden boardwalk.

Moment 3

Yongmeori coastal cliff walk at low tide

Yongmeori ("dragon head") is the volcanic cliff that juts into the sea on Jeju's southwest ??a 1-km low-tide path along basalt walls older than the island itself. We time it for late afternoon, when the light slants gold off the rock.
