When to Visit

Every season has a reason.

Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Oct–Nov) bring the calmest weather; summer (Jul–Aug) is for beaches and festivals; winter (Dec–Feb) covers Hallasan in snow and empties the trails.

Ferry from Mainland

Already in Korea?

Ferries from the southwest coast are slower but cheaper than flying. Wando (~2h 40m) is the shortest crossing; Mokpo (~4h 30m) is the busiest; Busan runs overnight (~12h).

On arrival

Jeju International Airport (CJU)

Everything you need lands where you do.

NoteA taxi to anywhere in Jeju City typically costs under ₩10,000.

Getting Around Jeju

Jeju's overhauled bus network covers the whole island; rental cars are popular for circling the coast.

There is no Uber/Lyft — taxis are hailed by app or street.

  • Hail taxis with the Kakao T app.

Connectivity (SIM, eSIM, Wi-Fi)

All three Korean carriers (KT, SKT, LG U+) sell tourist SIMs at Jeju Airport and at convenience stores around the island.

eSIM is the fastest option if your phone supports it.

Prepaid SIM

Physical card

  • Cheapest for 7+ days
  • Works in any unlocked phone
  • Top up at any 24/7 convenience store
  • Requires passport at activation
  • Pickup at airport booth (limited hours)
eSIM

Install before flight

  • Instant — no booth, no swap
  • Multi-country plans available
  • Keep your home number active
  • Phone must support eSIM
  • Slightly pricier than physical SIM
Pocket Wi-Fi

Rented router

  • Share with up to 5 devices
  • Good for families/groups
  • No phone setup hassle
  • Extra device to carry + charge
  • Most expensive per person
  • eSIM: scan the QR before you fly, or activate on the airport's free Wi-Fi.
  • Top up prepaid SIMs at CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or Emart24 across Jeju City.
  • Free Wi-Fi is widespread — cafés, buses, and major attractions.

NoteIf you plan to switch between Korea and other countries, an eSIM with multi-country data avoids juggling cards.

Korea Basics

A handful of small things catch first-timers off guard.

Electric plugs, tipping customs, smoking zones, and tap-water norms all differ subtly from home.

220V / 60Hz

Plug types C and F (round 2-pin). UK/US travellers need an adapter.

Tap water OK

Officially safe; locals still prefer bottled or filter dispensers.

0% tipping

Not customary anywhere. Don't insist — it can confuse staff.

Smoking ban

All bars, restaurants, cafés since 2015. Many outdoor zones too.

Free restrooms

Clean and free at every metro station, park, and commercial area.

Drive right

50 km/h city · 100 km/h highway. Black-box dashcams are standard.

NoteBring a small power bank — between maps, translation, and photos, your phone will drain faster than usual.

Emergency

Emergency & Help

Korea's emergency numbers are short and free from any phone.

The 1330 tourist hotline is the single most useful number for non-Korean speakers — translators are on the line 24/7.
